*ROSS, Sir John. /NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH-WEST
PASSAGE AND OF A RESIDENCE IN THE ARCTIC REGIONS during the Years 1829,
1839, 1831, 1832, 1833/.* Bound in half red calf over red cloth with
spine in compartments. A. W. Webster, London. 1835. 1st edition,
oversized 4to, pp. xxxiii, 740.

The narrative of the expedition to the Boothia Peninsula in the
"Victory" and the return by sledge, boat, and aboard the "Isabella" in
the years 1829 to 1833. The expedition was financed by Felix Booth and
led by Sir John Ross, with his nephew James C. Ross, as
second-in-command, and head naturalist. The Addenda includes the
official summary report of the expedition, and a glossary of sea and ice
terms used in the Arctic. See /Arctic Bibliography/ #14866. With all 25
full-page plates (including frontispiece) and five maps, one of which is
a folding coloured chart (and inserted in to the front of the book,
instead of at the rear, contrary to the binding instructions). Eight of
the plates are dramatically coloured. The folding chart has an early
repair to the tab. Infrequently seen with the Appendix (as a second
volume) which sets out the scientific results. The contents are foxed
throughout, but it is not excessive. There is occasional off-setting
from the plates. The boards are bumped, with some rubbing to the leather
tips. The cloth has a few small "blips" or ripples, and a touch, or two,
of soiling. The hinges and joints are strong, and the endpapers
unmarked. Overall, in very good condition.

Price: $500.00.
