*SHACKLETON, E. H. /THE HEART OF THE ANTARCTIC Being the Story of the
British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909. /* *With an Introduction by Hugh
Robert Mill, D.Sc. An Account of the First Journey to the South Magnetic
Pole by Professor T. Edgeworth David, F.R.S.* J. B. Lippincott Company,
Philadelphia. 1909. Heavy 4to. Pagination: Volume I, pp. liv, 366;
volume II, pp. xvi, 451 (plus three folding maps, and a panorama in a
pocket at the end of this volume).
First published by Heinemann (London) in 1909, this is the first Amrican
edition, and a separate printing from the British edition. All coloured
plates, plates, diagrams, and maps present. The embossed design in
silver to the front boards (taken from photo), showing three members of
the expedition standing next to the British flag, is still remarkably
clean, unscraped and bright. The lettering and designs to the spines are
similarly bright, although there is a trace of scuffing to the spine of
volume II. The bottom corners of both volumes are bumped. There is a
small white discolouration to the blue cloth at the base of the rear
board of the second volume. The gilt to the top edge of both volumes is
bright and unscraped. Both volumes carry the ornate bookplate of John J.
Albright, on which is written "To Mary N. Schmiedendorf (?)". On the
lower right of both front pastedowns, on the rear endpapers, and on the
blank side of two maps and the panorama is a rubber stamp of "The Higher
Thought Digest book department, Buffalo, N.Y." The contents are
exceptionally clean and bright. The binding is strong. A handsome set in
good plus, to very good, condition. See Spence 1098 (incorrectly showing
three volumes - it should be two).
