*SHACKELTON, Ernest H. (editor - volume I), Louis C. Bernacchi (editor -
volume II), A. G. B. Cherry-Garrard (editor - volume III). /THE SOUTH
POLAR TIMES. Volume I, April to August, 1902 / Volume II, April to
August, 1903 / Volume III, April to October, 1911. /* Complete three
volume set uniformly bound in three-quarter brown morocco. Illustrated
with colour plates, drawings and black-and-white photos. Published by
Smith, Elder & Co., London. 1907 and 1914. Thick 4to. The first
collected edition.

In the collecting of South Polar material, there are twin holy grails:
one is to obtain a copy of /Aurora Australis/, the first book published
in Antarctica; and the other is to obtain a set of /The South Polar
Times/. We are fortunate to be able to offer a complete set of the
latter, volumes I and II of which were published in 1907 in a limited
edition of 250 copies(of which this is an out-of-series set), and volume
III which was published in 1914 in a limited edition of 350 copies (of
which our copy is number 141). All three of our volumes have been
uniformly re-bound in rich brown morocco over grained brown cloth with
gilt rules defining the leather, five raised bands to the spines,
marbled endpapers, and top edges gilt. The boards show very light
rubbing to the spine ends, edges and tips. The is a touch or two of very
light soiling to the cloth. Internally, the volumes are pristine: there
are no flaws, and the reproductions of Dr. Edward Wilson's delicate
paintings, Ponting's dramatic photographs, and the various whimsies of
the men trapped for many long months during the sunless Antarctic
winters are splendid. To draw from the words of the Preface to the first
volume: "The owner of these volumes will possess an exact reproduction
of the original 'South Polar Times' which appeared during the winters of
1902-3 [and 1911], produced as they were for the sole edification of our
small company of explorers in the "Discovery" [and the 'Terra Nova']
then held fast in the Antarctic ice." Digital photos of this magnificent
set may be viewed at: http://www.greenfieldbooks.com/SouthPolarTimes.htm
