*FORTUNE, Dion. /THE GOAT-FOOT GOD/*. Bound in original blue cloth,
ruled in blind, with gilt titling. Williams & Norgate Limited, London.
1936. 1st edition. 8vo, pp. 382.

"Dion Fortune" is the pseudonym of Violet Mary Firth Evans (1890-1946),
who was born Violet Mary Firth. Her pseudonym was inspired by her family
motto: "Deo, non fortuna" ("God, not fate"). Evans claimed psychic
powers from an early age, and attended courses in psychology at the
University of London. Before establishing herself as an author, she
became a lay psychotherapist. The majority of her novels explored
various aspects of magic and superstition. She met and corresponded with
Aleister Crowley and participated in a movement by British occultists to
magically aid the British war effort during the Second World War.

"[This] book aproaches life from an unusual angle and suggests unusual
solutions of its problems. It also reveals something of the inner
meaning of the present revival of neo-paganism." The plot revolves
around a loveless marriage, an ex-monk who is an antiquarian book
dealer, and a prior walled up to die.

The bottom edge of the rear board has a few small bumps, and the corner
is bumped. The boards show several slight spots of soiling, but nothing
untoward. The dust jacket flaps have lightly off-set to the endpapers.
Otherwise, the book is very clean, tight, and free of former owner's
markings: it is in very good condition. The original dust jacket has not
been price-clipped. It shows a touch of rubbing to the folds, a tiny
nick to the front panel, and some light soiling to the rear panel and
spine. Otherwise, it is in very good condition.

Price: $575.00.
