PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS, AND REMINISCENCES OF DIPLOMACY UNDER 
DIFFICULTIES.  IN TWO VOLUMES.   Boston: Lee & Shepard; &c, 
1871.  First edition.  Original cloth, spine  extremities worn, some 
wear with white mark at foot of vol. II spine, inner joints 
opening.  Frontispieces and 2 maps (one folding).  GEORGE ALFRED 
TOWNSEND'S COPY, with his "Gath" bookplates which portray the 
monumental arch which he constructed in the Maryland panhandle 
commemorating Civil War correspondents, and with
a half-page autograph letter signed from Washburn to Townsend, 
Morristown, N.J., 1885, tipped in (arranging to meet 
Townsend.)  Scarce detailed work by this one-time California goldrush 
pioneer, duelist, US Minister to Paraguay, novelist, &c.  Townsend 
(whose nom de plume was "Gath") wrote fiction of the Delaware & the 
Eastern Shore localities that is still read today.      $375.00
