1) Adolphus (John) THE CATO STREET CONSPIRATORS / APRIL
1820. Cover title. Oblong format, original full leather. 9 engraved
leaves. First leaf with text:
"Toward the close of the trials for High-treason in April 1820, it
occured for Mr Alolphus, one of the counsel for the prisoners, that
it would be desirable to obtain and preserve a specimen of their
hand-writings. At his request, communicated through Mr. Harmer,
their solicitor, each of them wrote something in verse or prose, in a
book, sent to them for the purpose. Some wrote in court, and some in
Newgate - Of these sentences a fac-simile has been made, and a very
few copies printed, and Mr. Adolphus has the honour to present one to"
"Newman Knowles Esq / Common Serjeant of the City of London" [in holograph]
There follows in facsimile verse or prose by Tidd, Thistlewood,
Davidson, Wilson, Bradburn, Brunt, Inge, Cooper, and Gilchrist, all
of whom were soon decapitated. OCLC = no copies, apparently. $1750.00
2) Lewis (M.G.) THE BRAVO OF VENICE. London: Simpkin & Marshall,
1818. Signature of Caroline Gardiner across title. Attractive early
3/4 leather, 282pp. "The Seventh Edition" [sic?]. Shury published
in 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809. A Dublin ed. appeared in 1814. There
were early American editions prior to 1818. This is surely the first
Simpkin edition. $250.00
