On November 4th, 1852 Thomas J. Page was appointed as commander of the
fully equipped, somewhat experimental vessel Water Witch in which he
explored the Argentine Confederation and Paraguay at the request of the
U.S. congress.

“La Plata, the Argentine Confederation, and Paraguay” is an expanded
version of the report on that trip which was submitted to congress by
Page, after receiving “many letters asking for more detailed information
respecting that section of South America.” Page used his journals to write
a complete narrative of the expedition, illustrated with 46 line drawings
and a truly spectacular 36”x26” folding color “Map of the Basin of La
Plata”.

Included in the text are all the details of Page’s journey of three
thousand, six hundred miles by water and four thousand, four hundred miles
by land. The many illustrations include city and town views, a plate
showing natives fishing with arrows, Argentine cowboys lassoing bulls in a
swamp, and much more.
