CATALOGUE OF BOOKS ON OCCULT CHEMISTRY; AND A SELECTION OF THE MOST
CELEBRATED TREATISES ON THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF THE HERMETIC ART.,
London: Printed by MacDonald and Son, For Lackington, Allen & Co., Finsbury
Square. 1815 First edition. Octavo, original mottled pink boards, title
label on spine. 384 pp. [1] plate at page 296, Index, [4] pp. ads at rear.

and esoteric works & founder of the Jacob Boehme society, signed by him on
the half-title leaf, with his pencil notes on the rear endpaper and minor
marginalia in pencil throughout. Overall, a very good copy in the original
binding, and extremely rare thus. The first edition of the LIVES was
published in 1814 under the title THE LIVES OF THE ADEPTS IN ALCHEMYSTICAL
PHILOSOPHY, the second issue (with a new title page only) was issued in
1815 as THE LIVES OF THE ALCHEMYSTICAL PHILOSOPHERS. The first issue is
terribly rare, and most references the book refer to the edition of 1815.
The work consists of three parts: a series of biographies of adepts from
the earliest ages until the 18th Century; an alphabetical list of
alchemical books, and a number of alchemical treatises. The work was
"revised" by Arthur Edward Waite and republished in 1888 as LIVES OF
ALCHEMYSTICAL PHILOSOPHERS BASED ON MATERIALS COLLECTED IN 1815. The
authorship is unknown. Originally attributed to Francis Barrett (whose book
THE MAGUS was issued by the same publishers and is listed in the
publisher's advertisements at the rear), that attribution is now thought to
be incorrect. Candidates for authorship include Sigismond Bacstrom and
Ebenezer Sibley. An extremely important work in the evolution of modern
Hermetic philosophy. $3500.00

3) BACSTROM, Sigismond. Hamilton-Jones, J.W. (editor)., BACSTROM'S

printed. Small octavo, original blue cloth titled in gilt on spine panel.
Black & white frontispiece plate depicting a bookplate used by Bacstrom,
adapted from an Alchemical Figure in a fifteenth century manuscript. This
is the first edition of the first Alchemical work by Bacstrom. The MS, in
the hands of Hamilton-Jones, was originally titled "An Essay on Alchemy",
and is here published along with extracts from the great early Alchemists.
None of Backstrom's Alchemical books were ever published in his lifetime,
although H.P. Blavatsky, in LUCIFER (a Theosophical monthly magazine)
commenced the publication in serial form in February 1891 of a book
translated by Backstrom entitled THE GOLDEN CHAIN OF HOMERUS; the
publication of those installments was discontinued shortly thereafter upon
Blavatsky's death. Backstrom was an initiate of the Societas Rosae Crucis
and a disciple of Comte Louis de Chazal. A fine copy in a fine dust
wrapper, faint tanning to spine panel. A sharp copy of a scarce and
valuable book. $125.00

London: Theosophical Publishing Company / New York: W.Q. Judge. 1889. First

marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. 209 pp, with 5 colour plates (one
folding). The first edition in French of Gichtel's THEOSOPHIA, first
published posthumously in Leiden in 1723, an important mystical text, with
astonishing illustrations. Gichtel was heavily influenced by the writings
of Jacob Böhme (Boehme), and editied the first collected works of Boehme.
Gichtel's life and philosophy were entirely influenced by Boehme. The
illustrations in this volumeare striking colour lithographs depicting "The
grand mystery of divine revelation within the human form", the Perfect Man,
Terrestrial Man and Regererated Man. The publisher's imprint on the title
page has been covered with a slip stating "Bibliotheque Chacornac, 11, Quai
St-Michel, 11", but the colophon shows that this is indeed the 1897
edition. The binding is worn at the edges and the front spine hinges are
raw - the boards are holding but just on the cords, some chips to the
leather spine and marks to the covers. This copy was previously owned by
Dr. Charles Muses, author of esoteric works and founder of the Jacob Boehme
society, but is curiously not signed or annotated by him - Muses' usually

faded, but a very good copy. $75.00
