edition. Large octavo, original "dragonskin" patterned black cloth titled
in gilt on spine and with a Chinese Dragon in gilt on front panel. Colour
chromolithograph frontispiece of a Chinese Phoenix. A scolarly history of
mythical creatures, concentrating mostly on Dragons and Phoenixes. The book
deals in a rational way with the possibility of certain mythical creatures
existing, and delves into evolution, the extinction of species, and
misrepresentations of species. Heavily illystrated throughout with black &
white plates within the text.Inner hinges repaired with brown tape and one
section witin the text has an old tape repair which has stained the margins
of 2 leaves; Slight spine lean and a touch of wear to the cloth at
extremities, a very good copy. From the library of Dr. Charles Muses,

First American edition, utilizing the sheets of the 1895 Unwin edition.
Octavo, original crinkly brown paper wrappers titled in black. An occult
lost race novel concerning elves and fairies, written by the noted
occultist. With 12 black & white illustrations. a few rifling flaws but
overall a very attractive copy in the original wrappers. Issued in both
cloth and wrappers, this book is particularly uncommon in this issue. $200.00
28) HORNER, George., PISTIS SOPHIA. LITERALLY TRANSLATED FROM THE COPTIC BY
GEORGE HORNER. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY F. LEGGE, F.S.A., London: Society
for Promoting Christian Knowledge. 1924. First edition of this translation
of this important Gnostic text. Large octavo, original blue cloth titled in
gilt on spine panel. 205 pp. Index. The PISTIS SOPHIA is one of the key
works of Gnosticism. This edition is translated from the Askew Codex in the
British Museum, one of a very few codices that have survived the
suppression of such literature both in East and West. Dating from circa 300
AD, the PISTIS SOPHIA relates the Gnostic teachings of the transfigured
Jesus to the apostles assembled with him eleven years after the crucifixion
-the text proclaims that Jesus remained on earth after the resurrection for
eleven years, and taught his disciples the meaning of the mystery during
that time. The Gnostic codices are important in the way that they reveal
matters of Christianity which were not revealed (some would say suppressed)
from the Biblical Canon. Timely these days, with the popularity of such
books as THE DA VINCI CODE and HOLY BLOOD, HOLY GRAIL. From the library of

Iamblichus (ca. 245 - ca. 325,) a Neoplatonist philosopher who studied
under Porphyry, a pupil of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism. It was
with Porphyry that Iamblichus had a falling-out over his ideas on the
practice of Thuergy, or what we would today call Magick, and it is in this
book (De Mysteriis Aegyptiorum) that he makes his defense and explination
of the theories of Theurgy and Magic. From the library of Dr. Charles
Muses, author of esoteric works and founder of the Jacob Boehme society,
heavily annotated in pen by him throughout, th four final blanks entirely
covered in his miniscule and extensive scholorly notes. signed by him on
the front endpaper "C.A. Muses / 1950". A used copy bought by Muses at
Weiser Books, with their old bookseller's ticket on the front endpaper and
another previous owner's name partially obscured. The inner hinges show old
tape repair, the spine label has been sellotaped as well (by Muses?), the
corners are bumped and the cloth is somewhat stained. Overall, a good copy
with heavy annotations and underlining by Muses. $200.00

known as Simon the Sorcerer and Simon of Gitta, originally a Christian and
disciple of John the Baptist who broke off and formed the first Christian
heresy, Simonianism. After learning magical medicine in Alexandria he was
considered to have many magical skills specifically he is said to have
possessed the ability to levitate and fly at will. There were accusations
that he was a demon in human form, with the story of Simon the wizard as
the cultural equivalent of Merlin during the medieval times. Rear inner
hinge starting, and front inner hinge repaired; ownership marks from 1896
and 1930 on endpapers, cloth worn at edges, bumped, and with general
