“EXPLORATION OF THE VALLEY OF THE AMAZON, Made Under the Direction of the
Navy Department.”

By Wm. Lewis Herndon and Lardner Gibbon. Published by Robert Armstrong,
Public Printer in Washington: 1854.

In 1851 Navy Lieutenants Wm. Lewis Herndon and Lardner Gibbon trekked to
Lima, Peru to embark on an odyssey that would take them down thousands of
miles of river in canoes and last close to two years. Of course, the real
purpose of the trip was to quietly scout the Amazon basin for potential
commercial exploitation of its vast natural resources.

Early into the expedition the two decided to split up, with Herndon
exploring the headwaters and main trunk of the Amazon and Gibbon taking
the Bolivian tributaries. Lieut. Herdon’s report forms the first volume of
this set and includes descriptions of the landscape, agriculture, mining,
and the native Indians. There are 16 tinted plates with illustrations of
the land and people. Also included are three fold out maps.

Volume two consists of Gibbon’s narrative of his travels with 35 plates
lithographed by P.S. Duval & Co., Philadelphia. All 35 are from drawings
by Gibbon, who obviously enjoyed sketching in his odd stylized manner, as
well as 15 pages illustrated with line drawings of “antiquities”.

2 vols. Hardcover. 6"x9", iv + 414 pages, plus 16 lithographed plates x +
339 pages, with b/w illustrations in the text of native tools and
artifacts plus 36 lithographed plates...
