Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9104 ) Bourne, William (c. 1535-1582) Edited by E[va]. G[ermaine].
R[imington]. Taylor. A REGIMENT FOR THE SEA AND OTHER WRITINGS ON NAVIGATION
[THE HAKLUYT SOCIETY SECOND SERIES: NO. CXXI].
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1963. First thus, Full cloth, Octavo,
xxxvi, 464 pages, black & white plates, diagrams, tables. Near fine in a
very good dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
The 1574 first edition of "A Regiment of the Sea" is here reprinted in
full. It was perhaps the earliest technical manual written by an Englishman
and provides not only a clear window on early maritime navigation but also
captures a portrait of Bourne, the working class sailor and gunner. The
editor has also included additional material which appeared in the 1580
edition, two "Almanackes," and she wrote an introductory section to each
text. ALBION, p. 80. Bound in light blue cloth over boards with border rules
in blind and gilt device on upper board, spine lettered in copper gilt. Fore
corners slightly bumped. Jacket has some light overall finger soil, a touch
of fading along spine, and some minor edge wear. Clean and sound overall.
$50.00
