Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:

(No. 8669 ) [Ingraham, Joseph Holt] (1809-1860). LAFITTE: THE PIRATE OF THE
GULF (COMPLETE IN 2 VOLUMES).

Ingraham's first novel, published in an edition of 2,500 copies, tells
the story of the legendary New Orleans pirate, Jean Lafitte (ca1780-ca1826).
Lafitte and his men performed such gallant service for Andrew Jackson in the
Battle of New Orleans that President James Madison and Louisiana Governor
Claiborne pardoned them for the clandestine and lawless trade they had been
operating from their haven on the island of Barataria at he mouth of the
Mississippi River. Madison's proclamation of pardon and the sketch from
Timothy Flint's "History and Geography of the Mississippi Valley" which
inspired Ingraham are both included at the end of volume II. Lafitte moved
his operations to Galveston, Texas not long after the end of the War of
1812. SABIN #34774. Both volumes have been slightly trimmed and expertly
rebound in dark blue cloth over boards with marbled paper sides and new
marbled endpapers, spines titled in gilt. Top edges gilt, prior owner name
dated 1836 at top of both title pages. Some minor scattered foxing inside, a
few minor extremity rubs to bindings. $275.00
