HASUI, KAWASE: GOSHO NINGYO JAPANESE DOLLS.. ORIGINAL PORTFOLIO. 1935
Meiji Shobo. 24 woodblock print Impressions, printed on a soft medium
thickness Japanese paper, with embossed Colors and some colored
metallic pigments. They were printed by Kato Junji and published by
Meiji Shobo. Brown, Kendall; Amy Reigle Newland, "Kawase Hasui; The
Complete Woodblock Prints", Amsterdam, Hotei Publishing, KIT
Publishers, 2003, ISBN: 9074822460, - pg.149-50. This is the
portfolio complete with all of the prints, except one. Hasui is one
of the most respected and avidly collected 20th century Japanese
woodcut artists. Like his uki'oye ancestors, he did not cut his own
blocks. These are thus original woodcuts by him, all signed and
sealed in the block. There are 24 prints, but in an original
publisher's error one was included twice, therefore one print is
lacking. The original box top included a second copy of another
print, pasted on to it. OCLC notes 13 locations, several at museums
in the USA and the UK, none of these are dated, thus tending to
affirm that they are either later issues or not in the original
portfolios on which the date of issue is prominently displayed.. It
is however, now, rare on the market, except in the form of individual
prints, sold one at a time.. The portfolio Rpd. at joints, the two
text pages have folds at corners and edges. Plate 22 is repeated and
plate 19 is lacking. Plates are mint. This top is also included. The
two folded edges of the box are cracked, but holding. The box is also
dusty. The prints are all in their original mats, and in fine
condition. $1500.00
