      Kemble's fascinating PhD thesis on the development of transportation 
across the Isthmus of Panama, spurred by the California Gold Rush. Includes 
detailed appendices listing steamers with their tonnages and hull 
dimensions, etc., numbers of passengers taken across the Isthmus by year and 
route, treasure shipments from San Francisco by year and route, and steamer 
and engine builders serving the Isthmian routes. ALBION p. 39 (starred 
item). INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Kemble on front free endpaper. Good 
bibliography. Bound in maroon cloth over boards with spine lettered in gilt. 
No significant wear to book. Jacket has some minor edge wear including a 
shallow 3/4" wide chip at top edge of rear panel.    $125.00
