Greetings Booklovers,
We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9702 ) New York Yacht Club [Morgan, Edwin Denison (1854-1933)]. AN ACT
OF INCORPORATION. LITHOGRAPHS OF PENNANTS AND PRIVATE SIGNALS, LIST OF
YACHTS. CONSTITUTION, BY-LAWS, SAILING REGULATIONS, &C. OF THE NEW YORK
YACHT CLUB. 1890 [COVER TITLE: NEW YORK YACHT CLUB, 1890, "TOMAHAWK"].
New York: (s.n.), 1890. Full cloth, Duodecimo, [150+ pages], Color
illustrations of pennants. Very Good.
Handbook prepared for members of the New York Yacht Club which
includes much information on the membership and government of the Club. The
NYYC was given the America's Cup in 1857 and successfully defended the
trophy for 126 years. The Deed of Gift which governs the race to this day is
reproduced herein, as are the regulations for the club's other races. This
copy belonged to Edwin Denison Morgan for his 51' sloop "Tomahawk," whose
name is printed on front cover. Edwin D. Morgan was the son of New York's
Republican governor during the Civil War and distant relative of J. Pierpont
Morgan. Mr. Morgan became a notable organizer and syndicate manager in the
golden age of the Club's defenses of the America's Cup in large sloops. He
partnered with renowned yacht designer Nathanael Greene Herreshoff on many
of these boats, having been the original owner of Herreshoff's breakthrough
boat "Gloriana" in 1891. Morgan has been called "The Greatest American
Yachtsman," and was said to buy yachts with as little hesitation as an
ordinary man buys a newspaper. This guidebook lists all the club's yachts,
both sail and steam, their owners, home ports, specifications, color
depictions of their pennants, etc. The membership roster gives the
individual's date of election, city of residence, and membership number and
naturally includes the likes of Charles L. Tiffany, the Auchinclosses, the
Vanderbilts, A. J. Cassatt, J. P. Morgan and many other prominent names.
Items like this often reveal interesting historical connections. For
example, both John Jacob Astor and J. Bruce Ismay are listed as members
herein. Twenty-two years later, perhaps over a drink in one of Titanic's
luxurious lounge areas, perhaps they talked about the old days at the NYYC.
Astor went down with Titanic while Ismay, owner of the White Star Line, took
a seat in a lifeboat. The book is bound in coarse tan cloth over thin boards
with the club's seal and the name of Edwin D. Morgan's "Tomahawk" printed on
the upper board, patterned endpapers, and blue textblock edges. Someone has
penned "NYYC '90" at head of spine. The cloth binding is somewhat browned
and shows a few minor extremity rubs but no fraying. A few signatures
protrude 1/8" or less from the textblock but all remain well attached. A
fascinating New York yachting and America's Cup relic. $250.00
