SPINDEN, Herbert Joseph.

MAYA ART AND CIVILIZATION. Revised and Enlarged with Added
Illustrations. Part I: A Study of Maya Art. Part II: The Nuclear
Civilization of the Maya and Related Cultures.

Indian Hills, Colorado: The Falcon's Wing Press. 1957.

First printing of this new edition, expanded and enlarged from the
Peabody Museum edition of 1913. The Publisher's file copy, with a 6
page unpublished typescript by Spinden laid in. Large octavo,
original cloth and board. 432 pp., colour frontispiece, indexes,
plates, text illustrations, 2 folding charts.

From the library of Charles A. Muses, then publisher of the Falcon's
Wing Press. A note on the title page in Muses' hand states 'Designed,
edited and cuts & extra plates & frontispiece selected by C.A. Muses,
then editor-in-chief, Falcon's Wing.' Slight marginalia and notes on
rear endpaper, plus 12 leaves of cryptic notes clipped together with
a tag 'For Maya Book', all in Muses' hand. There are also further
notes, clippings, catalogues, a sectioned dust wrapper, a letter from
Daniel D. Streeter, editor of the Explorer's Journal, to Muses, dated
1959 and referring to a review of the book in his Journal, extra
illustrations, etc., all loosely laid in. Accompanying the book is a
6-page typescript by Spinden titled MAGIC AND ASTRONOMY, with a note
in Muses' hand on the first leaf stating "Unpublished. Rec'd from Dr.
Spinden 1950".

A very good copy in a slightly rubbed dust wrapper with light wear at
edges and one small tape repair. A unique copy of an important work.
