*DARWIN, Francis. /THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF CHARLES DARWIN, Including an
Autobiographical Chapter/*. Complete three volume set in original 3/4
leather binding. John Murray, London. 1877. 1st edition, 8vo.
Pagination: volume I, pp. ix, 395; volume II, pp. [vi,], 393; volume
III, pp. iv, 418.
Francis Darwin (1848-1925) was the son of famed naturalist Charles
Darwin (1809-1882). He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and
became his father's secretary and research assistant in 1875, remaining
in these positions until his father's death. He then edited his father's
letters, first published collectively in this form in 1887, and later,
"More Letters of Charles Darwin", first published in 1902. He was
knighted in 1913. This set is bound in 3/4 dark brown leather over green
cloth boards, with all edges marbled, and with matching endpapers. The
illustrations include three full-page frontispieces of Charles Darwin as
he appeared in 1854, 1874, and 1881.
The spines have lightened a bit, over time, and the edges of the boards,
and the joints, are quite worn. All joints are tender, particularly
those of volume I (which are really only attached by their cords), and
the volumes should be handled carefully as a consequence. Internally,
all volumes are tight and particularly clean. There are no former
owners' names. Overall, a nice set, excellent internally, weak and
somewhat worn externally, but with faults that a competent binder can
easily repair.
Price: $350.00.
Terms of sale - the price is in USD. Payment by check or credit card.
Postage and packing charge for the three volumes will be $10. Returnable
within seven days of receipt if not as described.
