Carion, Johannes and Philipp Melanchthon. CHRONICON ABSOLTISSIMUM AB ORBE
CONDITO USQUE AD CHRISTUM DEDUCTUM, In Quo non Carionis Solum Opus Continetur...
Philippo Melanthone Autore. No place: No pub. 1560. 16mo. 2 parts in 1, each
with its own title page. 788,(6)pp. Index. Cont. vellum, somewhat soiled. On a
blank leaf at back is a 2-page manuscript Latin poem on the death of
Melanchthon & dated 1580. $1,250.00 (trade discount allowed)
Melanchthon’s final revised and expanded Latin version of this world
chronicle (from a Lutheran perspective), originally written by Johannes Carion in
German in 1532. Our 1560 edition without publisher or place is quite scarce, only
Yale and the University of Chicago with copies in America. The British Library
records a copy and states the imprint to be (Lyon: Jean de Tournes), but this
work is not listed in Cartier’s DE TOURNES bibliography. Also, not recorded
in VD 16, which lists Latin editions of this work after 1558 under Melanchthon,
not Carion.
