1836. First edition. Folio, contemporary black pebbled cloth. [4 pp – title 
leaf & dedication] +VIII + xxiii + 245 pp. Issued in three parts from 1836 
– 1841, THIS IS PART ONE ONLY. The complete work extends to some 555 pages, 
ours is 245 pages. This copy bears the dedication to Baron Silvestre de 
Sacy, which is missing in most copies. Printed in red and black. A 
MONUMENTAL WORK ON THE DECIPHERMENT OF EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHICS. Champollion 
[1790-1832], recognized as the father of Egyptology, is credited with the 
translation of the Rosetta Stone in 1822 and establishing the alphabetic 
character of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. His work Précis du Système 
Hiéroglyphique des Anciens Egyptiens appeared in 1824, followed by his 
Grammaire Egyptienne in 1836-41. Endpapers torn, binding cracked, a good 
copy only. With the embossed stamp of mystical philosopher Charles Arthur 
Muses on the title leaf.

Octavo, contemporary (original?) boards with cloth spine panel titled in 
gilt. 472 pp. Appendixes, Index. 6 plates (two folding) depicting Egyptian 
scenes, statues, and inscriptions. Older stamp of the Kunstnuverheld Museum 
in Haarlem at base of title page, plus 2 other ownership stamps and the 
embossed stamp of mystical philosopher Charles Arthur Muses on the 
half-title leaf. Hinges broken and roughly repaired, small 19th C library 
sticker at base of spine, boards worn at edges. Good condition, solid, but 
the binding repaired.
