6. REACH, ANGUS B.[ETHUNE], HENRY GEORGE HINE,
Illus.: THE COMIC BRADSHAW, OR, BUBBLES FROM
THE BOILER. London, D. Bogue, 1848. 64 p. :
ill. ; 14 cm. This seems to be The First Comic
Work Aimed from first to last at the RAILWAY. It
was meant to poke fun at railways and its small
size made it easier to read in railways cars. The
prelude to the trip, with contretemps by way of
horse and carriage don't remain funny. The trip
itself has comic difficulties we all still can
appreciate. It also seems to be quite rare.

HORATIO AND LAETITIA : A Poem, in Five
Epistles. Utica [N.Y.] : Printed for the

p. (p. [140] blank), [2] leaves of plates : ill.
; 18 cm. (12mo) Signatures: A-L6 M4. Ascribed to
the "Douglas brothers" in Wegelin [Poetry], 1st
ed., v. 2, p. 62, 1378; and to T.A. Rockwell in
J.C. Williams, An Oneida county printer (New
York, 1906), p. 47. Vales of peace: a pastoral,
In two epistles" Note :"The engravings on wood,
by William Williams"-P. [139]. Sinclair Hamilton
noted that Williams was, perhaps, our third wood
engraver, who taught himself the white line
method. In the Harvard copy, the engraving of
the frontispiece and p. 138 are ascribed in
pencil to J.M. Redmond. Our copy is unusual in
that it contains one more than the required 2
full page engravings. The extra one is at Pp.
8-9. It is made up of two blocks. The outer
block is identical with that used in Williams own
book label, [See William Williams, Oneida Country
Printer overleaf of the Addenda ]. Within that is
a landscape engraving unrecorded elsewhere. This
is one of very few early American books of poetry
which aspire to the standing of beautiful books
to accompany romantic poetry. It is interesting
that one of our most frugal American printers is
responsible. There is little doubt that learning
to wood engrave was a way of saving money as was
his ownership of a paper making mill. Both, of
course, contribute to the quality of the book.
This title is described on P.47; Hamilton 1294,
Fig. 123, Williams P.47 and facing plate. Early
owner's signature on Rr. Fr. EP "Uriel H.
Kellogg". Original calf, gilt double ruled
crossing lines on spine, black Mro. label, gilt.
In an Original paper flaw, the lower corner of
the front free EP is lacking. The full page
prints are all printed on finer and lighter paper
than that used for the letter press and
vignettes. Very Good to Fine. While this has been
a rarity in our lifetimes, it was not always so,
and a number of copies, with the normal quota of
wood engravings are found in major research
libraries. A letter to a bookseller, from the
librarian at Princeton, discussing this copy accompanies it. $400.00
