(INCUNABULA) Josephus, Flavius. DE BELLO JUDAICO, DE ANTIQUITATE JUDAEORUM
CONTRA APINONEM [Translated by Rufinus Aquileiensis & Edited by Ludovicus
Cendrata]. (Verona: Petrus Maufer. Dec. 25, 1480). Folio. 212 (of 214) leaves,
lacking the two preliminary unsigned leaves containing the editor’s letter of
dedication (see below for a discussion). Roman type. A large margined copy. The
final 65 leaves have an old brown (oil?) stain in the outer blank margin (in 6 of
the leaves the stain extends into the text). 18th century vellum backed
boards, rubbed and somewhat soiled. With the bookplates of Viscount Mersey of
Bignor Park and Arthur John Naish. $17,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The only signed book by this printer. Apparently, only some copies contain
the 2 leaves of preliminaries. Of the 7 copies which have appeared at auction in
the last 30 years, 5 have lacked these 2 leaves. The third leaf, a blank, is
present in this copy. Goff J484. BMC VII 951. Hain 9452.
