DES INFINIMENT PETITS, Pour l’Intelligence des Lignes Courbes. Paris: De l’
Imprimerie Royale. 1696. 4to. (18),182,(2)pp. Illustrated with 11 copper engraved 
folding plates, an engraved title-page vignette, and 2 engraved headpieces 
and tailpieces. Modern full tan calf done in antique style. Seven of the folding 
plates have been repaired at the fore-margin (with no loss of content but 
with some old marginal soiling). Occasional light soiling of the text. An old 
oval library stamp is in the blank margin of one leaf and the bookplate of the 
Bibliotheca Lamoniana is on the front pastedown. This copy has the contemporary 
ownership signature of Louis Gon de Bergonne, M.e de Compter (a French finance 
minister) in the blank margin at the top of the title-page.     $2,750.00

The first edition of the first textbook of the differential calculus. It 
includes the original publication of ideas developed by Leibnitz and Bernoulli. L’
Hospital (1661-1704) acknowledged his indebtedness to his sources, but also 
claimed credit for some work which was not his own. Norman, #1345. (Norman’s 
copy in cont. vellum sold for $5,500 plus hammer in 1998.)
