[CEYLON- SRI LANKA]
NEVILLE, Hugh [editor]. . THE TAPROBANIAN. A Dravidian Journal of Oriental
Studies in and around Ceylon, in Natural History, Archeology, Philology,
History, &c. Vol 1, Nos 1-6; Vol 2, Nos 1-6; Vol 3, Nos 1-3, plus the
Supplemental Extra Part to Vol 1. Bombay: Printed and Published every Two
Months at the Education Society's Press. /
London: Trubner & Co. 1885 - 1888.
First edition. A complete run from Vol 1, No 1 - Vol 3, No 3. Folio, 197 pp
(v1) + 184 pp (v2)+ 72 pp (v3) + x (supplement); original wrappers all
present. 10 plates are listed as "to be published hereafter", none are
present here.
A wealth of material on Ceylon and Ceylonese culture. Mythology, Geology,
Anthropology, Archeology, Herpetology, Zoology, Religion, Linguistics, etc,
etc. Articles include works on ancient coins, beads, temples, language
studies, folklore, gemology, ritual sacrifices, .... Included here is THE
NITTAEWO OF CEYLON, the first report on the lost dwarf race of aboriginals.
A quick google search brings up references to dozens of articles from this
journal, and an OCLC search lists only 6 copies in University Libraries
worldwide (plus the BM copy). Original wrappers somewhat torn and frayed
but overall very good and intact; the issues are all bound together at the
spines but without a real binding, the front wrapper of V1, 1 and the rear
wrapper of V3, 3 are the outermost leaves. From the library of mystical
philosopher Charles Muses, with his handwritten notes here and there,
sometimes in pencil, othertimes in pen. A very good set; overall, of a very
rare and interesting journal.
