Andre, George G. "THE DRAUGHTSMAN'S HANDBOOK OF PLAN AND MAP DRAWING,
including instructions for the preparation of Engineering, Architectural,
and Mechanical Drawings"

London; E. & F.N. Spon: 1874.

A very pleasing guide to Victorian map and plan making, nicely illustrated
with a number of colored plates. Mapmaking may sound dry, but this book is
devoted to the pictorial side of the trade, and is a lot of fun to browse
through even if you never plan to elevate a geological strata or map out
the family estate. The text covers creating maps and plans and discusses
lines, colors, shading, symbols, lettering, scales, plotting, and
reducing, as well as how to set up a drawing office and the tools and
materials needed.

The plates include illustrations of map and title lettering; decorative
compasses; pictorial symbols used in plans and maps; signs and symbols
used in “Indian and Colonial maps; signs and symbols used in military
maps; a variety of sample maps and charts; symbols used in geological
elevations and maps; and sample plans illustrating a marine steam engine,
a grand country house, isometrical rendering and cut-aways of a house, a
masonry tunnel and railroad track.

Hardcover. 7.5”x10”, xii + 150 pages with 86 text illustrations and
figures, plus 33 full-page plates, 5 of them double-page plates, and 15 of
them colored. Publisher’s blue cloth with gilt title; covers with minor
wear and rubbing, a little internal discoloration and soil, but a nice
copy. [30606] $300.00
