A Scarce 1824 Booklet on the
     Most Famous Neoclassic Painter-

"NOTICE SUR LA VIE ET LES OUVRAGES DE M. J.-L. DAVID. AVEC PORTRAIT"
Paris; Dondey-Dupre Pere et Fils: 1824.

A short appreciation of the great Neoclassic painter Jacques Louis David,
written the year before his death. David was living in exile in Brussels
at the time, and Simon Lee (Grove Dictionary of Art) lists this pamphlet
in his bibliographical note as having been published in Brussels and
written with David’s collaboration (all five copies located by OCLC list
the imprint as Paris). The lithographed portrait frontispiece is quite
striking, showing a side-burned and handsome David looking somewhat
imperious in a high-collared shirt with a wide-lapelled waistcoat, white
cravat, and medal. Scarce- OCLC locates just 5 copies, of which only 2
have the additional 4 page publisher’s catalog (pages 81-84).

Hardcover, with original wraps bound in. 4.25”x6.75”, 84 pages,
lithographed portrait. Rebound in newer marbled boards with a cloth spine,
with the original pink paper covers bound in; the paper covers with loss
at the base, and remounted on a newer stiff page; also some cover soil;
contents with some foxing. The last 4 pages are a listing of other titles
available from the publisher. [30600] $350.00
