Andrew Ure [1778-1857] was a professor of chemistry who also worked for
the British government and several private companies. He authored several
important books on chemistry and manufactures, of which his “Dictionary”
was the culminating title.

Ure, Andrew. "A DICTIONARY OF CHEMISTRY, on the Basis of Mr. Nicholson’s;
in which the principles of the science are investigated anew, and its
application to the phenomena of nature, medicine, mineralogy, agriculture,
and manufactures, detailed"

London; Thomas & George Underwood: 1821.

The first edition of Ure’s famous treatise. This is a highly useful book
with an emphasis on applied chemistry. Found amongst its pages are entries
on acids, alum, bone, bread, cement, clay, dyeing, gas, iron, light,
madder, opal, silvering, soap, and so on. Hardcover. 5.5”x9”, xix + about
500 pages, with 15 engraved plates, several folding; period marbled boards
with leather spine and gilt title; covers a bit worn and rubbed; some
internal soil; some foxing to the plates. Errata slip. Ownership
inscription of “Peter Stevenson, Dyer, Clinton, Mass September 1st, 1852”

Ure, Andrew [& P.L. Simmonds]. "THE PHILOSOPHY OF MANUFACTURES: or, an
Exposition of the Scientific, Moral, and Commercial Economy of the Factory
System of Great Britain...Continued in its Details to the Present Time by
P.L. Simmonds"

London; H.G. Bohn: 1861. 3rd edition.

Originally published in 1835. Simmonds writes that in this new edition his
aim is “to concentrate as much descriptive and statistical information
connected with these great manufacturing industries, as should serve to
convey the idea of their position and progress both at home and abroad”.
The book begins with Ure’s original text, and then continues with
Simmonds’ additions- Progress of Manufactures Since 1836; Recent History
of Cotton Manufacture; Recent History of Flax Manufacture; Recent History
of Silk Manufacture; Recent History of Wool Manufacture. Hardcover.
5”x7.5”, xvi + 766 pages, b/w frontispiece and text illustrations; a note
says that the power-loom factory plate from the earlier edition has been
moved to the Cotton section, but I cannot find it; neatly recased with
newer endsheets; spine darkened; stain on rear cover; light soil and wear

New York; D. Appleton: 1868.

Corrected and Greatly Enlarged edition. One of the great compendiums of
manufacture of the 19th century, first published in 1839 and enlarged and
updated a number of times. From amber and alabaster through brass, brick
and bread, calico printing, cutlery, gas-light, glass-making, gunpowder,
ice production, leather, pickles, silver, soap and tea, to white lead,
wheeled carriages and wine, almost everything you can think of, any many
things you wouldn’t have thought of, are here.  Hardcover. 2 volumes.
7.5”x10”, xiv + 1,118 + 998 pages; “with nearly 1600 engravings on wood”;
publisher’s pink pebbled cloth, rebacked and with new endpapers; spines
sunned; faint name stamps on the title pages; a nice, clean, tight and
