Offering: BARDDAS, Two Volumes in Original Cloth
AB ITHEL, Rev.J. Williams.
BARDDAS; Or, A Collection of Original Documents, Illustrative of the
Theology, Wisdom, and Usages of the Bardo-Druidic System of the Isle of
Britain. With Translation and Notes. [In Two Volumes].
Volume I: Llandovery: Published by D.J. Roderic / London: Longman & Co.
1862. Volume II: London: Bernard Quaritch. 1974. Both Volumes published for
the Welsh Manuscript Society.
First Editions. Octavo, original green cloth embossed in blind on front
panels, gilt titles on spines. Despite the fact that these volumes were
issued 12 years apart by separate publishers, the bindings are matching.
Lxxxv + 425 + 168 pp. The very uncommon complete 2 volume set of this work.
Printed in both Welsh and English on facing pages. Careful and accurate
transcriptions of early Welsh manuscripts depict the metaphysical and
spiritual beliefs of the Celtic Bards as passed down through t he
centuries. The Bardic lineages dating back to Taliesin are outlined, the
beliefs and laws of the Druids and Bards are clearly explained, and the
entire work is a wealth of interesting knowledge and forgotten lore. The
second volume states on th e title page "This fragment of the unfinished
second volume was found in the Stock of the late Mr. Rees of Llandovery,
after it was purchased by Bernard Quaritch". Inner hinges cracking, and
those of Vol. I repaired with old tape, light wear and scu ffing to the
cloth, publisher's imprint at base of spine of Vol. I printed off-register;
a very good set. From the collection of mystical philosopher Charles A.
Muses, with his handwritten notes throughout the text and on the rear
endpapers of both volumes. Now considered a classic, and recently reprinted
- "Serious students of Druidism and Paganism, as well as Celtic Historians,
are sure to include BARDDAS in their libraries. BARDDAS contains the only
extant description of Bardo-Druidic Celt ic philosophy".
