Congrés international des orientalistes. [International Congress of
Orientalists]
Compte-rendu de la Premiere Session. Paris - 1873. Tome Premier, avec
Planches et Figures Interglacees dans le Texte.
Paris : Maisonneuve et cie. 1874.
First edition. Octavo, wrappers. Volume one (of three). 583 pp., 57 plates.
Highly important and exceedingly scarce, this is the first volume of the
first congress of Orientalists, and marks a point where Eastern Culture was
basically unveiled to the west. A massive amount of material is here, by
the leading scholars of the day. But, perhaps more importantly, the plates:
The colour plates include a Japanese colour-tone chart, Japanese money, a
Samauri Warrior, a map of Tesiho, Japanese Plants and Fossils... the
remainder of the plates are in black & white, with the exception of THREE
PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATES of Japanese Aino. These photographs are original
images, tipped in; fairly small (oval, 6 x 8.5 cm), and depict three types
of Ainu ( a young man with a beard, a young woman with beads, and an old
man with a pipe and bowl). The woodcut print facing page 295 appears to be
missing from this volume. In fairly rough condition, the front wrapper
apparently missing (the outermost leaf appears to be a half-title leaf)
outer wraps torn and frayed, the spine reinforced externally with tissue;
overall good condition only, but very beautiful, very interesting, and
very, very scarce.
$500.00 US
terms: as usual.
