VISHNIAC, ROMAN: POLISH JEWS; A PICTORIAL RECORD
WITH AN INTRODUCTORY ESSAY BY ABRAHAM JOSHUA
HESCHEL.: New York, Schocken Books [1947]. Royal
8vo, 16 [2], 21 [1]. These are the last pictures
made of the Jews of Eastern Europe by any
photographer. Vishniac made a 2000 mile trip
through Eastern Europe in 1938, taking all of his
photographs candidly, without the awareness of
his subjects. This small selection was published
after the destruction of all of these communities
and their way of life in Eastern Europe. It is
therefore an important historic document.
Original cloth, Fine, in a Very Good dust Jacket.
The jacket lacks about ½ inch at the crown and no
more than a ¼ inch at the foot of the spine.
there is also a small lacuna on the rear board
lower edge, about ¼ inch high and ½ inch wide. $300.00
