Mercer, Henry C. "GUIDE BOOK TO THE TILE PAVEMENT IN THE CAPITOL OF
PENNSYLVANIA" [Henry C. Mercer: 1908].

In 1908 Henry C. Mercer wrote and published, at his own expense, a
complete illustrated guide to the magnificent mosaic tile floor recently
laid in the halls and rotunda of the Pennsylvania state capitol building.
The tiles illustrated "facts and events in the history of Pennsylvania and
the life of its inhabitants", starting with the Native Americans and
ending with oil wells, locomotives and automobiles. Each tile is
illustrated and explained here, and keyed to the place it may be found on
the floor.

Henry C. Mercer was the founder of the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, as
well as an architect, historian, collector, archeologist, and student of
craftsmanship and its tools. He wrote books which are still considered
standard studies of joinery tools and antique cast-iron stoves, designed
and built his own castle, and founded a tool museum; today the Mercer
Museum houses 50,000 tools and artifacts. Although reprinted several
times, the original 1908 edition of this title is rather scarce.

Softcover. 4.5"x8.5", 98 pages, b/w illustrations; with errata sticker on
the last page. Original grey softcovers, slight wear, but overall a very
nice copy of a fragile book. [30427] $150.00
