Gullick, Thomas John & John Timbs. "PAINTING POPULARLY EXPLAINED:
including Fresco, Tempera, Encaustic, Miniature, Oil, Mosaic,
Water-Colour, Missal, Painting on Pottery, Porcelain, Enamel, Glass, &c.
with Historical Sketches of the Progress of the Art"

London; Kent and Co.: 1864. 2nd edition, revised & enlarged.

A valuable source of information which surveyed the history of various
types of painting from a technical aspect, delving into the subjects of
processes, materials, tools, techniques and such. An appendix treats
briefly on scene painting, painted embroidery, crayon or pastel painting,
framing & hanging pictures, study at the Royal Academy, and “What is
Pre-Raphaelitism?”

This edition contains two interesting additions which were not in the
first (1859) edition- sections on “Stereochrome, or Water-Glass Painting”
(a substitute for earlier methods of fresco), and photographic portraiture
& coloring photographs.

Hardcover. 4.25”x6.75”, x + 336 pages, b/w frontispiece; marbled
endpapers; all edges gilt; elaborate full leather prize binding with
entwined strapwork and the Royal Arms in gilt on the front cover; raised
bands and gilt spine title; covers lightly rubbed; prize label on
pastedown; very light corner stain on first few pages, else a very nice
copy indeed. [30602] $100.00
