SCROETER, Johann Samuel. LITHOLOGIESCHES REAL--UND VERBAL LEXIKON... 
Frankfurt am Mayn: Varrentrapp Sohn und Wenner, 1784, 1785, 1788. Three 
volumes (volumes 6, 7 & 8 only (of 8) including entries for "S" - "Z") 
bound in one. Thick 8vo. in marbled boards with calf back and tips. 
Covers moderately worn with rubbing along front outer hinge, and edges. 
All edges red. Bookplate of Henry A. Muhlenberg (dated 1848) on front 
pastedown. Inner hinge cracked, but book is sound. Pages toning. Entries 
include synonyms of the German, Latin, French and Dutch language. A 
lexicon of petrology, the study of rocks including the formation of 
fossils. Schroeter, (1735-1808), was a German pastor and minister with a 
passionate commitment to the study of paleontology. Henry A. Muhlenberg, 
(1823-1854), grandson of noted Lutheran minister Henry Melchior 
Muhlenberg, had this book in his library while practicing law in 
Reading, Pennsylvania. He soon after entered politics serving in the 
Pennsylvania State Senate and the US House of Representatives.  $275
