Eastlake, Charles Lock. "MATERIALS FOR A HISTORY OF OIL PAINTING" London;
Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans: 1847. One of the most important 19th
century books on the history and techniques of painting, by one of the
century’s most important and influential artists & designers. Eastlake
reviewed every source he could lay hands on from many countries to compile
this history, which covers materials, techniques and theories from ancient
times through the Renaissance. “One of the most complete studies of
painting materials, methods, and techniques ever undertaken on the basis
of literary sources of the past” -Mayer, ‘Artist’s Handbook’ (1941).

Brimo, Rene. "L’EVOLUTION DU GOUT AUX ETATS-UNIS, d’APRES l’HISTOIRE DES
COLLECTIONS" Paris; James Fortune: 1938. A doctoral thesis on the
development of taste and art collecting in America from the Colonial
Period to the First World War, with much interesting material, especially
on the development of “Grand Collections”, public and private. Brimo was a
graduate of l’Ecole du Louvre and held a Masters of Arts degree from
Harvard; this thesis was for his doctorate at the University of Paris.

Delamotte, Philip H. "THE ART OF SKETCHING FROM NATURE". London; George
Bell and Sons: 1888. 2nd edition. A beautifully illustrated Victorian
guide to nature sketching and watercoloring for the amateur artist.
Delamotte includes a chapter on materials and tools, and then addresses
his topic by subject, starting with the sky and clouds and moving on
through trees, plants and water, and also composition and color.
Illustrated with 20 beautiful color pates of paintings, mostly by
Delamotte, but also including the work of Varley, Prout and E.W. Cooke.
Hardcover. 10”x12.5”, vi + 69 pages, plus 20 mounted color plates and 24
line illustrations in the text; publisher’s grey cloth with gilt title;
covers scuffed, somewhat soiled, and spine a bit threadbare; contents with
