Aime Humbert (1818-1900) minister plenipotentiary was sent by
Switzerland as the head its first trade delegation to Japan in 1863.
During his nearly year long stay, he recorded his observations of
Japanese society, religion, history, and law. "His vivid descriptions
of Japanese legal processes, in which the sword and the bamboo stave
played important roles, make it easy to understand why western
governments insisted on 'extra-territoriality' in their treaties. ...
'The repression of common offences' he wrote 'is marked from
beginning to end by ferocity'," (Neil Pedlar: The Imported Pioneers:
Westerners Who Helped Build Modern Japan, p184).

This is the first appearance of this work which was later printed in
book form as 'Le Japon Illustre' (Hachette, 1870) and then in
English as 'Japan and the Japanese Illustrated' (1874). Also included
are articles and illustrations on the Exploration of High Asia, the
Pubjab, Kashmir, the Caucuses, Sudan, the Volga, Babylonia, Brazil,
South America, New Caledonia, Peru, Abyssinia, Spain, Loire Mines,
Alaska, and Florida (with an additional 1600 steel engravings and 67
maps).

Very good or better, the occasional scuff to boards, tiny chip to
head of one spine, faint dampstain to the upper margin of one volume,
scattered foxing mainly to margins, the odd tear, engravings quite
sharp and clean, bindings tight. [28932] $650.00
