1.  CHARLETON, Walter. CHOREA GIGANTUM; OR, THE MOST FAMOUS  ANTIQUITY
OF  GREAT-BRITAN,  [sic]  VULGARLY   CALLED  STONE-HENG,  STANDING  ON
SALISBURY  PLAIN....  London:  Henry Herringman 1663.  First  Edition.
Small  quarto  (5-3/8" x 7-1/2") bound in contemporary full calf  with
gilt  floral  decorations  in  each corner of both  covers;  [16],  64
pages.  Title  page  printed in red and black; Imprimatur  leaf  dated
1662  present  before  title page. Illustrated with  a  large  folding
plate  of  Stonehenge  and  a full page woodcut. Contains  a  poem  in
tribute  to  the author by John Dryden, this with all six first  state
points  as noted by Macdonald 8a. Charleton, a physician to Charles I,
attempts  to  prove that Stonehenge was made not by the Romans but  by
the  Danes as a place of assembly and to inaugurate kings. Wing C3666.
With  the  bookplate of Charles Agar, the first Earl of Normanton,  on
the  front pastedown. Slight soiling to contents. Some loss of leather
at  head  and heel of spine; front hinge tender. Very Good  copy  of a
fairly scarce book.                                           $3000.00

2.  EMERSON, Ralph Waldo. ENGLISH TRAITS. Boston: Phillips, Sampson, &
Co  1856. First Edition. Original black cloth, blindstamped with  gilt
lettering  on the spine, yellow endpapers. BAL 5226; Myerson  A24.1.a.
This  copy  with the battered type at the bottom of page 230  and  the
"1"  on  the half title page. Emerson's superb book on his travels  in
England  including a chapter on Stonehenge. A few small, faint  stains
to  the cloth; a small gouge on the spine, not terrible in appearance.
Otherwise  the cloth is in very nice shape with the spine ends  intact
and  the gilt bright. Contents very clean as well with the owner  name
of  C.H.A. Carter on the front endpaper. Housed in a cloth chemise and
a  half brown morocco slipcase with gilt lettering on the spine.  Near

3.  [SILLIMAN, Benjamin]. A JOURNAL OF TRAVELS IN ENGLAND, HOLLAND AND
SCOTLAND  ... IN THE YEARS 1805 AND 1806. New York: D & G Bruce  1810.
First  Edition.  Two  octavo volumes bound in tree calf  with  leather
labels.  Illustrated with three plates of Stonehenge. Smith S90:  "The
author  was professor of chemistry and natural history at Yale College
from  1802 to 1853 and was probably the most prominent and influential
scientific  man in America during this time. His book finds much  of a
scientific  nature to note and comment upon. It makes good reading and
has  interesting comments on universities and scientists." Text  clean
Spines dry, front joint split on first volume but tight. Good  $250.00
