*EVANS, Rev. John, /THE PICTURE OF BRISTOL; or A Guide to Objects of
Curiosity and Interest, in Bristol, Clifton, The Hotwells, and their
vicinity; including Biographical Notices of Eminent Natives./* Printed
for and Published by W. Sheppard, Exchange; sold also by Norton and
Ross, Barry, Browne, Bulgin, Frost, Mintorn; Miss Prust, Clifton; and
all booksellers. 1814, Bristol, England. 1st edition. Small 8vo, pp.
156. [bound together with] *BULLAR, John*/*, AN HISTORICAL AND
PICTURESQUE GUIDE TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT. */Printed and sold by Baker and
Fletcher, Southampton, England, 1806. 1st edition. Small 8vo, pp. 120.

The "Bristol" book has an engraved folding "Plan of Bristol", a lovely
copper-engraved folding "View of Bristol (engraved by Holmes), an
engraved folding "View of the Cathedral, seen from the Palace Garden",
an engraved folding view of St. Mary Redcliff, eight Appendices at end,
and one page of advertisements. "The Isle of Wight" book has, as a
frontispiece, an engraved "View of Cowes Harbour". Of particular
interest, and curiosity, are two pages of neatly-written notes, parts of
which appear to be in code, and other parts of which are in somewhat
inscrutable English. The first page appears on a blank preliminary page
preceding the folding "Plan of Bristol". The second appears opposite the
last page of text to "The Isle of Wight" book, and contains references
to the American Civil War, indicating they were penned in the 1860s.
There are also occasional "ticks", or one, or two, word marginal
comments to the text.

This volume is bound in plain, paper-covered boards with an overlapping
cloth spine. The boards are well-worn and the spine is rather shabby.
The contents are very clean although, as the binding is somewhat sprung,
the gatherings are a bit loose. There is off-setting from the plates,
particularly noticeable with the "Cowes" frontispiece.

Evans was the author, along with John Corry, of /The History of
Bristol, Civil and Ecclesiastical/ (1816). Although /The Dictionary of
National Biography/ has many entries for "John Evans", it appears that
this author was the Master of Park Row Academy, Bristol. Bullar
(1778-1864) was a schoolmaster and campaigner for liberal causes. He was
the author of /A Companion on a Tour Round Southhampton/. WorldCat shows
only two later editions of the Bullar title (1817 and 1827)

Both titles are quite scarce. The price is for the book containing the
two titles.
