We offer for Sale:
Bachmair, John James. A GERMAN GRAMMAR, CONTAINING THE THEORY OF THE
LANGUAGE THROUGH ALL THE PARTS OF SPEECH, BY JOHN JAMES BACHMAIR,
M.A. TO WHICH ARE PREFIXED RULES FOR PRONUNCIATION AND SPELLING.
Philadelphia: Printed by Charles Cist, 1788. [4] 100 pp. Sm. 8vo.
Disbound. Evans 20937. ESTC W12398. First edition.
An abridgment of Bachmair's 1772 Complete German Grammar. "The German
Language is much used in this State: It is a Language of great
Compass, Energy, Expressiveness and Variety. These Excellences,
however, for Want of proper Helps and due Attention, are known but by
a few. The Study of it is becoming now an Object of Respect,
particularly in this City; not only among the German themselves, but
others, especially Young Men of liberal Education. For the
Accommodation of such, this Grammar hath been carefully prepared: It
will be found to contain every Thing that is essential in Bachmair's
Grammar, yet in a more concise form; and consequently may be
purchased as a considerably lower price. - The Editor intended it
principally for the University of Pennsylvania, where at certain
Hours, daily, the Students are exercised in Speaking and Writing
German. The Method adopted in this Respect, and the Opportunities
that may be had constantly in Philadelphia of conversing in the
Language, rendered it unnecessary to retain in this Book the
Exercises..." (Preface). The printer, Charles Cist, was born in
Russian, and both in a partnership with Melchoir Steiner, and later
on his own, published extensively in German. Lacking the boards,
blanks loose, staining along the lower corner, browning along the
fore edges, owner's name on title, and dated 1792 on top edge of
preface, scattered foxing, impressions crisp, a good copy.
