Smollett, T[obias], M.D. A Complete History of England Deduced from the
Descent of Julius Caeser, to the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle, 1748. Containing
the transactions of one thousand eight hundred and three years. In four
volumes [with] Continuation of the Complete History of England. London:
Printed for James Rivington and James Fletcher, at the Oxford Theatre, in
Pater-Noster Row, 1857-8; 1866. 

Quartos. [vi], 677; 708; 552, [1] (an "Explanation of the Plates"); [1]
("Explanation of the frontispiece), 700; 508; 464pp, [50], [1]. Includes an
index to the four volumes of the original text, as well as an "Index to the
Continuation...". Large folding map of England and Wales opposite page one;
engraved frontispieces to each of the first four volumes, with the
frontispiece to the first volume hand-colored. Contemporary speckled calf,
boards and spines with gilt rules, spines with raised bands and contrasting
leather labels lettered in gilt. Joints tender, and spines with some degree
of loss at top and bottom. Volume one re-cased, with a modern calf spine,
unadorned. Each of the volumes with some wear and defects to the boards,
spine label of volume four with some loss - altogether a Very Good set of
this important work, not commonly seen in the first edition. Image available
