S. H,. STILLMAN. : "ONE HUNDRED VERSES IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SAD
CASUALTY OF SEPTEMBER, 1860, BY THE CAPSIZING OF A BOAT CONTAINING
FIVE PERSONS ON PENOBSCOT BAY NEAR CAMDEN WHILE RETURNING FROM THE
CAMP MEETING AT NORTHPORT, AND RESULTING IN THE DEATHS OF, MRS.
COLBY, MRS HOPKINS, AND MRS. JAMESON . . . . . .By S. H.Stillman."
Npl, Npub. Probably 1860, Camden, ME? Very long broadside printed on
light yellow paper. The stanzas are 4 lines long with a rhyme for the
first two lines and another for the last. The meter is not carefully
preserved, and some lines are syllables longer than others. The
subject of the poem was the fate of a group of worshippers who were
returning to their homes from an annual camp meeting held for
religious observance. Two of the passengers were saved by a nearby boat.
Verses 21-24.
Now Mr. Thomson, as I hear,
His little bark did safely steer;
His course in safety did pursue
Till Northport faded from their view.
She like a swan upon the tide,
O'er billows high did safely ride,
As if on pinions swift she flew,
And near to Camden harbor drew.
The breeze now freshened to a gale,
Now Mr. Thomson forward went,
To take in sail was his intent;
Alas, how soon they were surprised,
The sail was jibed, the boat capsized!
What horror must have seized each mind,
When in the water low they find
Themselves, immersed beneath the wave,
And struggling there, their lives to save.
Laid down on good rag paper. But previously, edge tears and an
occasional fold tear were mended with scotch tape, of which 8 short
pieces remain. There are several breaks in the type ornament border
which surrounds the verse. There also are three consecutive verses
which have paper loss affecting letters in about 8 words, and as
well one further verse with three letters lacking. The scotch tape
did prevent further loss, as did the backing. Unlocated in
