Squibb, Edward R. "PROPOSED LEGISLATION ON THE ADULTERATION OF FOOD AND
MEDICINE"

New York; G.P. Putnam's Sons: 1879.

"Rough draft of a proposed law to prevent the adulteration of food and
medicine, and to create a state board of health, with explanations and
illustrations of the principal points of the law. Reprinted from 'The
Transactions of the Medical Society of the State of New York' for 1879.
Notes in reply to criticisms by the press. The British 'Sales of Food and
Drugs Act of 1875' with notices of some rulings of the British court".

Dr. Edward R. Squibb was a Navy physician who left the service in 1858 to
found his own laboratory. In 1877 he helped save the "United States
Pharmacopoeia", the standard guide to drug standards in the United States.
In 1879 he gave the speech this essay is based on, calling for national
food and drug standards. Ten days afterwards federal legislation was
filed, but it languished in Congress for many decades, a victim to the
"states vs. federal government" squabbles. Squibbs' laboratory, meanwhile,
became E.R. Squibb & Sons in 1892, and continues today as Bristol-Myers
Squibb, the third largest pharmaceutical company in the United States.

Hardcover. 5.25"x7.5", 57 pages; an ex-library copy in library covers of
plaid boards and cloth tape; title page embossed, clear taped and with
several notes, but the rest of the text is clean. [05475] $125.00
