*WHITTLE, P. A. /BLACKBURN AS IT IS: A Topographical, Statistical, and
Historical Account. /*Published by H. Oakey, Fishergate, UK. 1852. 1st
edition. Royal 8vo, pp. 398.

An detailed account of the Borough of Blackburn, in the Hundred of
Blackburn (lower Division), in the County Palantine of Lancaster (i.e.,
in the County of Lancashire) which relates: "Its Antiquities and Modern
Improvements, including a correct copy of the Charter granted in the
Reign of Queen Victoria; Biographical Sketches of Eminent Men, &c., A
Directory for 1852, with a List of the Streets". With frontispiece.

Peter Armstrong Whittle (1789-1866) was a Lancashire antiquary, and a
bookseller and printer at Preston. From 1810 to about 1851, he published
primarily topographical works. This title would appear to be his magnum
opus. It is a very scarce work, and seldom encountered. Our copy is in
the original blind-stamped cloth-like paper binding, with a printed
paper label affixed to the front board. The boards are bumped at the
corners and there is general moderate wear and noticeable soiling to the
binding. The frontispiece is of the Arms of the incoporated Borough of
Blackburn. The endpapers are noticeably foxed, and the binding is
slightly sprung (but nothing is loose, or about to become so). The
contents are generally clean, with a few spots to the margins, and a
hint of age-toning. Overall, the book is in good condition.

Price: $250.00.
