"A CATALOGUE OF THE LIBRARY OF THE SALEM ATHENAUM, IN SALEM,
MASSACHUSETTS; to which is prefixed A Brief Historical Account of the
Institution, with its Charter and By-Laws"

Boston; printed by John Wilson and Son: 1858.

The Athenaeum Library had its beginnings in the libraries of the Social
and Philosophical Libraries, late 18th century Salem institutions whose
books were acquired by the Athenaeum at its founding in 1810. The first of
the Social Library’s books had been purchased in England in 1761, and then
in 1781 an American privateer captured a vessel holding the books of Dr.
Richard Kirwan as it crossed the Irish Channel. These were brought to
Beverly and sold to the Library, which, after the war, offered to
reimburse Dr. Kirwan. The good doctor politely declined, “expressing his
satisfaction that his valuable library had found a destination so useful”.
This catalog, the fifth in the history of the Athenaeum, was prepared
after the library had been moved to the newly-constructed Plummer Hall and
comprised about 11,000 volumes.

Softcover. 5.75”x9.25”, xxi + 179 pages. Original light grey card covers,
covers with some soil, tips slightly thumbed, very minor chip. A very nice
copy in the original covers. [31082] $150.00
