(the plate vol.) contains 267 photographic plates (more than half in color). 
Vol. I (the text vol.) is illustrated with 54 text figures. In the original 
publisher’s binding of brown linen over gold printed paper covered boards. Gold 
paper spine labels printed in black. Covers a bit soiled & spines rubbed. Outer 
hinges of Vol. II split & frayed but holding nicely.     $3,000.00 (trade

Joseph Wilpert is one of the key figures in Christian archaeology and early 
Christian art. In 1902 he discovered the crypts of Pope Damasus and of St. Mark 
and Marcellianus. These two volumes remain the most accurate work on the 
catacombs.
