[COOPER, James Fenimore] THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS; A NARRATIVE OF 1757....
Carey & Lea Philadelphia 1826. The true First Edition of this classic
and very scarce. Two volumes bound in one in full contemporary polished
calf with a morocco spine label. BAL 3833; Grolier One Hundred
Influential American Books, 34: "This is the ... most famous of the
Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumppo was
made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic in the lives
and characters of the white men who made the American wilderness their
home"; Johnson: High Spots of American Literature, pp. 24-25; Spiller &
Blackburn 7. Closely trimmed throughout, occasionally touching the page
numbers and text on some pages. The last leaf of the preface has been
bound before the first leaf. The first two leaves of the text proper
have clean horizontal tears that have been crudely mended with old
stitching. The lower corners of two pages have been torn off and laid
in, slightly affecting text. Vertical tear at bottom gutter of title
page to the second volume extending about halfway up and slightly toward
the center of the page and similarly to the last page of text. Signature
19 of second volume misbound in first volume. Old dampstain to part of
second volume but not terribly distracting. Several pages in both
volumes partly sprung. Rear endpaper lacking. The binding is in quite
nice shape with some wear at the head of the spine and rubbing to the
label and spine. A Good, entirely unsophisticated copy of this rare
classic. $7500.00
