Miner, William Harvey. SAVAGE -THE RAKE  [and] CHATTERTON - THE PRECOCIOUS
YOUTH. TWO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY CHARACTER SKETCHES.

[Cedar Rapids]; The Torch Press: 1905.
One of 15 copies printed on Japan vellum.

Character studies of two unhappy English 18th century imposter-writers:
Richard Savage, poet, friend of Johnson and Pope, and pretender to the
Macclesfield fortune, who died in debtor’s prison; and Thomas Chatterton,
the brilliant boy-poet who pretended to be a 15th century monk and took
poison before his 18th birthday.

One of the earliest publications of the Torch Press. An additional 200
“regular” copies were printed. Miner was a well-known bookseller and
author of historical material, and ran the Torch Press bookshop between
1909 and 1917.

Hardcover. 3”x5.25”, 65 pages; publisher’s black cloth and linen spine;
marbled endpapers; light soil, very minor staining on the cover. Inscribed
by the author on the colophon page- “To “Everybody” Xmas ’05 -Bill”.
