A Quartet of Important Color Books-

George Field [1777-1854] was a manufacturer of pigments and the author of
several books on color, and was the subject of a 1989 exhibition at the
Fitzwilliam Museum. The first edition of his landmark “Chromatography” was
published in 1835, and the book went through a number of editions and
revisions over the years, many radically changed.

-Field, George & Thomas W. Salter. "FIELD'S CHROMATOGRAPHY; or, Treatise
on Colours and Pigments as Used by Artists. Salter’s Edition"  London;
Winsor and Newton: [1869]. For this new edition much of the information
was updated, and many important new colors added. Hardcover. 6”x8.5”, vi +
435 pages, plus a 33 page illustrated catalog of art supplies; publisher’s
green cloth with gilt titles and device; covers somewhat scuffed and worn,
hinges internally cracked and a bit wobbly, light internal soil, a few
spots, and a few pencil notes. [30768] $200.00

-Field, George. "THE RUDIMENTS OF COLOURS AND COLOURING, with the nature
of pigments for the use of decorative artists, painters, etc."  London;
Strahan & Co.: 1870. This abridged edition was first published in 1850, to
provide a practical text for painters. This revised edition of that
revision includes new chapters on “Colours of Material Objects” and
“Pigments” by Robert Mallett, and many other revisions and updates.
Uncommon. Hardcover. 5”x7.25”, xiv + 271 pages, with 7 text figures and 3
dramatic hand-colored plates; publisher’s green cloth with gilt title;
covers a bit scuffed and worn, inner hinge cracked and wobbly,
preliminaries a bit discolored, a little soil. [30769] $150.00

-Field, George & J. Scott Taylor. "FIELD'S CHROMATOGRAPHY. A Treatise on
Colours and Pigments for the Use of Artists. Modernized" London; Winsor
and Newton: 1885. 4th ed. This edition is an updated version of Salter’s
revision of 1869, with “irrelevant” matter excised and much new material,
including 4 chromolithographic plates, included. One really must have a
copy of each edition. Hardcover. 5.5”x7.5”, viii + 207 pages with 4
chromolithographed plates, plus a 4-page list of other books; publisher’s
green cloth with gilt titles and colored bar on the cover; covers with
minor wear, but overall a clean, bright copy of an attractive edition.
[30770] $175.00

-Field, George & Ellis A. Davidson. "A GRAMMAR OF COLOURING applied to
Decorative Painting and the Arts by George Field, revised, enlarged and
adapted to the use of the Ornamental Painter and Designer by Ellis A.
Davidson" London; Crosby Lockwood and Son: 1888. This edition, tailored
to the needs of ornamental painters, was first published in 1874, and may
well contain more by Davidson than Field. It also contains material on
Egyptian, Greek, Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance style and coloring.
Hardcover. Xvi + 224 pages, with 38 wood engraved illustrations in the
text and 2 chromolithographed plates; plus 56 pages listing the
publisher’s other books. Publisher’s green cloth; covers a bit scuffed,
minor internal soil, but a nice copy. [30771] $150.00
