[ARMSTRONG, Neil; ALDRIN, Buzz] NICKS, Oran W. (editor). THIS
ISLAND EARTH. Washington: NASA 1970. First Edition. Quarto (9-1/4" x
11-1/4") bound in gilt-lettered maroon boards; 182 pages. Illustrated
with mostly color photographs. This copy boldly SIGNED in blue
felt-tip pen by the first two men to walk on the moon: "All the Luck
in the World/Neil Armstrong/Apollo 11" and "Buzz Aldrin." Above the
Armstrong and Aldrin signatures is a SIGNED INSCRIPTION from NASA
executive Dr. Abe Silverstein who helped organize NASA in 1958 and
who was appointed the Headquarters Director of Space Flight Programs
with responsibility for developing and initiating all space missions.
The mission of a manned journey to the Moon and back was conceived early
in NASA’s history, and it was Silverstein who laid the groundwork for
the mission and who named it "Apollo" in 1960 because he thought that
the image of Apollo riding his chariot across the Sun was appropriate to
the grand scale of the proposed program. Genuine Armstrong signatures
are rather uncommon, especially in books and with the added notation of
the name of his famous mission. Near Fine, without dustwrapper, as
issued. $5000.00
