BROOKSHAW, George THE HORTICULTURAL REPOSITORY, CONTAINING DELINEATIONS
OF THE BEST VARIETIES OF THE DIFFERENT SPECIES OF ENGLISH FRUITS...
Sherwood, Jones, & Co. London [1820]-23 First Edition. ...TO WHICH ARE
ALSO ADDED, DELINEATIONS OF THE BLOSSOMS AND LEAVES, IN THOSE INSTANCES
IN WHICH THEY ARE CONSIDERED NECESSARY, TOGETHER WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF
EACH FRUIT, ITS TIME OF RIPENING, AND A VARIETY OF OTHER OBSERVATIONS
ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTION OF THE BEST KINDS. Two octavo
(5-7/8" x 9-5/8") volumes newly bound in full green morocco with gilt
rules, black morocoo spine labels with gilt lettering, five raised
bands, and black-stamped spine decorations. Illustrated with 104
hand-colored plates including 7 folding (actually 98 plates as 6 of the
folding are counted as 2 plates) of a variety of English fruits. Nissen
245. Brookshaw was a flower painter and little biographical information
is known about him. His best-known work is POMONA BRITANNICA, perhaps
the most beautiful fruit book. The plates in the present work, though
smaller, are equally beautiful. Small blindstamp of a college library on
the half title and title pages but nowhere else. Plates are trimmed
close in some instances but never interfering with the images.
Occasional mild stain, slight offsetting to one plate, but all are very
attractive. A rare book, often broken for its lovely plates which
typically sell, when found, for several hundred dollars each. Plates
quite clean and bright. Binding handsome and Fine. Rare! $12,500
