Joseph De Guignes (1721-1800) French orientalist, was interpreter of
the Eastern languages at the Royal Library and held the chair of
Syriac at the College de France. This work, originally published in
1756-1758 in French, is one of the seminal works on Central Asia and
"the most important account of the people of Asia published up to
that time'' (Atabey), despite de Guignes' claim that "the Chinese are
an Egyptian colony."

Extremities worn with paper loss at the edges (newer marbled paper
laid over earlier paper), spines heavily rubbed but titles and
decorations still easily legible, later typed paper labels with
author's name and numerals, front joint split on v.1 and partially on
v.5 though binding is still solid, small marginal dampstain to fore
edge of first 25 leaves of v.1; some offsetting, mainly to corners of
endpapers, stamp of the Library of the Russian Orthodox Academy on
the title pages, front pastedown with book plates of K.I. Nevostrueva
and A.I. Ward; leaves clean and unmarked, impressions sharp. Solid
copies of rather hard to find volumes. [29676] $1500.00
