Robinson, P[eter] F[rederick]. DESIGNS FOR GATE COTTAGES, LODGES, AND PARK
ENTRANCES, IN VARIOUS STYLES, FROM THE HUMBLEST TO THE CASTELLATED"

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1837. 3rd edition, “greatly improved”.

Robinson [1776-1858] wrote several popular books of designs for
architects, and was noted for his ability to adapt historic styles. In
this book he offers designs for 12 structures in all, each described and
shown first in a charming “in situ” lithograph, followed by a floor plan
and 2 architectural elevations. The buildings fall into three categories:
“Timber Fronted”, “Elizabethan”, and “Castellated”, with Robinson
suggesting in his prefatory remarks that the correct gate lodge was an
important consideration for an estate, as it indicated “the character of
the structure to which it affords an approach”.

This copy is from the library of Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow Jr.
(1854-1934), with his signature (A.W. Longfellow) on the endpaper. A
nephew of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, A.W. Longfellow was a noted Colonial
Revival architect (Longfellow, Alden & Harlow) who had apprenticed with
H.H. Richardson, and was one of the founders of the Boston Society of Arts
and Crafts.

Hardcover. 9.5”x12”, iv + [12] + 48 lithographed plates; Publisher’s green
cloth with leather spine and cover label with gilt titles; covers quite
soiled and worn, spine rubbed; rear hinge cracked and front hinge detached
from the text block; contents with some minor soil and a few spots; front
endpaper with signature of A.W. Longfellow. A nice association copy in
need of some bindery work. [30747] $750.00
